Laying Down the Groundwork

It's Memorial Day weekend and we finally have a couple of days off and what do we decide to do....clear brush and trees! We've been needing to do this for a while, and now that we've decided to become more self sufficient we knew we needed to make the most of every inch of land we had....so the jungle had to go.

Here are the before and after shots, we still have a little cleaning up to do but the big stuff is done!

And the handsome guy with the smile is GLAD!

The Chicks

Our first official order of business in the quest to farmdom.....chickens!

We just got our first chicks yesterday...6 Lavender Orpingtons from Dreamy Acres Farm in Marshville, NC.....they are so adorable, I'm in love already!

Makin' A Plan

My husband and I have been working on a layout in an attempt to get everything we want
on our 1.8 acres.  So far it's looking pretty good....looks like a 2-3 year plan to get everything going, the farm will include...

Bee Hives - for pollination and Honey to sale....
Blackberries, Raspberries, Blueberries, Grapes, Pears, Peaches, Apples - all for us,
and selling extra....
Heirloom Vegetable Garden - for us - extra to use at our restaurant.....
Herb Garden - for us and plants to sale and to use in crafts....
Chicken Coop area - eggs for us and eggs and chicks to sale...
Compost area...
Garden area for Perennials to sale....
a Greenhouse....
some Rain Barrels....
and a Hammock.....

at my husbands request (I think after seeing all this he believes he's going to need it!)

The Why...

In a world full of technology and instant everything I've decided to pursue a dream I've quietly and longingly held onto for a long time, getting back to the basics and the land.

Growing up, I stayed alot with my Grandma Lula, who not only kept a large vegetable garden and a variety of fruit trees, but churned her own butter and made meals from scratch everyday among other things, the best days of my childhood were spent at her house.

The way she lived her life may have been alot of work compared to the way we live our lives today but I remember after a day at Mawmaw's, going to bed at night tired and happy and having a feeling, even then, of purpose and living with intention, something I've been missing for a long time.

So even though my husband and I now live on a small piece of land (a little less than 2 acres) I know that with some hard work and sweat we can make it our own country paradise...our own mini farm on the hill....hence Happy Hill Farm will slowly but surely come into being.

I invite you to tag along as we make this journey in an effort to not only find forgotten roots again but strive to make our little part of the world a better place ....... thanks for coming!
